A JBL Cove M1 review naturally puts it against the Sonos Era 100. Both are compact WiFi speakers designed for home audio, both support multiroom playback, and both sit in roughly the same price category. The difference is less about basic sound playback and more about how each company approaches the connected speaker.

JBL Cove M1

The Cove M1 is JBL's new entry into whole home WiFi audio. It combines a four inch woofer with three tweeters and uses automatic room tuning to adjust its output according to placement.

Its strongest distinction is connectivity. The Cove M1 supports AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Roon, Bluetooth, Auracast, and JBL's own multiroom system. It also includes Music Follows Me, which allows playback to be moved between compatible JBL speakers without digging through an app.

For someone using several streaming services or a mixture of Apple and Android devices, that flexibility is attractive.

Sonos Era 100

A Sonos Era 100 review tells a different story. Sonos uses two angled tweeters and a midwoofer, along with Trueplay room tuning and the company's established multiroom platform.

The Era 100 supports WiFi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, voice control, stereo pairing, and integration with other Sonos speakers and home theater products. Its largest advantage is maturity. Sonos has spent years building the surrounding software and hardware ecosystem, while Cove is still a new platform.

JBL Cove M1 vs Sonos Era 100

The Cove M1 offers broader compatibility with outside streaming platforms and several newer features. The Era 100 offers a more established ecosystem with years of multiroom development behind it.

Sound quality cannot reasonably be reduced to the number of drivers. JBL's three tweeters may provide broad room coverage, while Sonos has extensive experience tuning compact speakers around its own acoustic design. Both also perform room correction rather than expecting the speaker to sound identical in every location.

The decision therefore comes down largely to ecosystem preference. JBL emphasizes flexibility and direct compatibility with numerous services. Sonos emphasizes a tightly integrated system built around Sonos hardware.

Which one should you choose?

For an existing Sonos household, the Era 100 is the obvious fit. Adding another speaker to an established synchronized system makes more sense than introducing a separate platform.

For someone choosing between the two without existing equipment, the Cove M1 deserves considerably more attention than its newcomer status might suggest. It offers unusually broad streaming support and several thoughtful multiroom features, while the Era 100 offers the more established platform.

Neither makes the other obsolete. The JBL Cove M1 is the more flexible option, while the Sonos Era 100 is the more mature ecosystem choice.
