RemoveMacAI Turns Off Apple Intelligence and Removes Its Models on macOS 27

RemoveMacAI

RemoveMacAI is a new macOS utility built around a change Apple made in macOS 27 Golden Gate: Apple Intelligence no longer has one master control that disables the entire system. Apple now directs users to separate settings for features such as Siri AI, Mail summaries, Messages summaries, and other Apple Intelligence functions, while the underlying models can remain stored on the Mac. RemoveMacAI packages those separate controls into one reversible command and also removes downloaded Apple Intelligence models through Apple services rather than deleting protected system files manually. The project appeared publicly on October 2 and had reached roughly 306 GitHub stars and nine forks by October 4, while its launch post on Reddit passed 999 votes and produced reports from people running it on their own Macs.

RemoveMacAI Does More Than Disable Siri

Running RemoveMacAI turns off Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension, message and email summaries, notification summaries, inline text predictions, Spatial Photos, Photos Clean Up, and Xcode predictive completion. It then asks Apple’s asset service to remove the downloaded model sets associated with those features.

The utility can also leave selected features enabled through its keep option, so removing most Apple Intelligence functions does not require disabling every component. Dictation remains available because its speech models are separate from the Apple Intelligence assets handled by the tool.

Apple says the current generation of Apple Intelligence can require up to 14 GB of device storage on newer Macs with M3 or later processors and at least 12 GB of unified memory, while other supported Macs can require up to 8 GB. Some RemoveMacAI users are reporting considerably larger figures in macOS Storage, including totals above 30 GB, although those reports should not be treated as equivalent to Apple’s published requirement because macOS storage accounting can include different assets and can lag behind actual deletion. The developer changed RemoveMacAI after early users found that the operating system sometimes continued displaying storage as occupied after the asset service had been asked to remove it. Version 0.2.1 therefore stopped telling users that space had been reclaimed immediately and now explains that macOS may delete the underlying files on its own schedule.

It Does Not Disable System Integrity Protection

RemoveMacAI does not require users to turn off System Integrity Protection or manually delete files from the system partition. According to the project documentation, it creates a configuration profile using Apple’s restriction mechanisms, then uses Apple’s asset service to request removal of the relevant downloaded models. The profile also redirects future requests for those removed model assets to a closed local port, which prevents the system from downloading them again while the profile remains active. Running the revert command removes the profile and restores the previous configuration so macOS can download required models again when an Apple Intelligence feature needs them.

That approach also means RemoveMacAI changes more than a visible collection of preference switches. Applications that rely on Apple’s Foundation Models framework can stop working while the relevant models are disabled, along with the Use Model action in Shortcuts, Visual Intelligence, and natural language editing features in Calendar. The project lists these effects directly rather than presenting model removal as a storage cleanup with no functional consequences. Users who still want a particular Apple Intelligence feature can preserve selected components instead of disabling the entire group.

Early Users Already Found a Real Deletion Bug

RemoveMacAI reached version 0.2.3 only days after its first public release, and the changes are largely responses to behavior found on actual Macs rather than additions to the feature list. On some systems, including macOS 27.0.1, Apple’s per set status interface reported that no models were installed even when their files were still present. Earlier RemoveMacAI builds trusted that status and could therefore complete without deleting anything. Version 0.2.3 changed the utility to read model sizes from the asset service inventory and request removal when asset folders still contain files.

The bug is a useful example of why reclaiming Apple Intelligence storage is less straightforward than flipping preferences in System Settings. One Reddit user reported that RemoveMacAI showed the models as removed while macOS continued counting the storage, which led to the clarification added in version 0.2.1. Another later reported using version 0.2.3 on the macOS 27.2 developer beta and seeing nearly 32 GB disappear from a 512 GB Mac after reviewing the project before running it. These remain individual user reports rather than controlled measurements, but they show that people are testing the utility against the exact storage behavior it was created to address.

The Installation Is Unusually Transparent for a System Utility

RemoveMacAI can be installed through Homebrew, after which the removemacai command displays the current state and asks for confirmation before making changes. The project also offers a one line installer that downloads the latest release, checks its SHA256 value, runs the utility from a temporary directory, and does not leave a separate installation behind. Starting with version 0.2.3, release builds are produced from their corresponding Git tags through GitHub Actions and include build provenance attestations. Homebrew now installs the prebuilt binary as well, so Xcode and the Command Line Tools are no longer required merely to use the program.

The utility itself makes no network requests according to its documentation, although macOS still communicates with Apple when its own services operate normally. Its model download block works locally through the configuration profile rather than by maintaining a background RemoveMacAI process. The tool can therefore be removed after use while the profile remains in effect, although running the provided revert command is the cleaner way to restore the previous Apple Intelligence configuration. The project is licensed under MIT and incorporates work from the earlier pared utility, which mapped parts of Apple’s asset service and several related settings.

RemoveMacAI Currently Supports Only Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 27

The current release is intended for Apple Silicon and macOS 27 Golden Gate. macOS 26 and earlier are explicitly listed as unsupported, so RemoveMacAI should not be treated as a general Apple Intelligence removal tool for every version of macOS. The developer has tested macOS 27.0 and documents version 0.2.3 or later for machines running 27.0.1 because of the asset inventory problem discovered after launch. Users on later macOS 27 updates may encounter behavior that has not yet been tested as extensively, which is especially relevant for a project that depends on system behavior remaining consistent across updates.

Apple itself describes Apple Intelligence as automatically available on eligible hardware after upgrading to version 27.0 in supported regions and languages. Its current Mac documentation explains how to disable individual Apple Intelligence functions rather than presenting the single system wide switch familiar from earlier releases. RemoveMacAI is effectively filling the gap between those individual controls and users who want the models and related features removed together. That gives the project a fairly specific reason to exist rather than simply duplicating controls Apple already exposes in one place.

RemoveMacAI Is Spreading Faster Outside GitHub Than Its Star Count Suggests

The repository had roughly 306 stars by October 4, while tracking data showed substantial additional star growth during the same period. Its Reddit launch post produced even more visible engagement, passing 999 votes within two days and attracting questions about storage recovery, macOS updates, selective feature retention, reversal, and whether the utility works on newer macOS 27 builds. Current web coverage remains relatively limited, with most discussion still concentrated around GitHub, Reddit, tracking sites, and smaller technology publications. That leaves searches around RemoveMacAI installation, compatibility, storage behavior, and version changes relatively open compared with older Mac utilities.

The project also has a natural source of continuing search traffic if Apple keeps changing how Apple Intelligence is packaged and controlled in macOS. Every macOS point release can potentially alter model storage, asset reporting, supported features, or the behavior of the configuration profile RemoveMacAI depends on. Users are therefore likely to return with version specific questions rather than treating the utility as a one time launch story. That kind of recurring compatibility problem tends to create more durable search demand than a repository that becomes popular for a few days and then stops changing.

Download RemoveMacAI for Mac

RemoveMacAI 0.2.4 is the current official release for Apple Silicon Macs. The GitHub package contains the prebuilt command line utility, while Homebrew remains available for users who prefer package management. The release also includes a separate SHA256 file for verifying the downloaded archive. Users running an older RemoveMacAI version should use the current release because several early model removal failures have already been corrected.
