OpenClaw is suddenly climbing GitHub again, but it is not a brand new project. It is already one of the largest open source AI projects on GitHub, with roughly 390,000 stars and more than 82,000 forks.

The renewed attention coincides with OpenClaw 2026.9.6, released late on September 23 and updated again on September 24. OpenClaw describes itself as a personal AI assistant that runs on your own devices and can connect to services such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Teams, and iMessage while using models including Claude, Codex, and local AI models.

What is OpenClaw?

OpenClaw is designed to give an AI agent access to more than a chat window. It can work with files, tools, skills, messaging services, computers, and connected applications while keeping its central Gateway on hardware you control.

The current project supports macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android. Users can also change the AI model behind OpenClaw instead of being permanently tied to one provider.

That flexibility has created an enormous ecosystem around the project, including plugins, skills, companion apps, and ClawHub, where additional capabilities can be added.

What is new in OpenClaw 2026.9.6?

The new release expands OpenClaw in several directions at once. The Web interface can now start independent background tasks directly from the command palette, including tasks created from pasted screenshots, without interrupting the conversation already open.

OpenClaw also added complete 30 day usage reporting, more capabilities for remote workspaces, improved meeting notes, and a GitHub reader that can bring public discussions and code changes into an AI conversation.

Model support was expanded as well. OpenClaw 2026.9.6 adds support for newer models including Claude Opus 5.5, GPT 6 Sol, GPT 6 Luna, and Grok 4.7.

The release also introduces optional Decision Models, including TypeSafe Jev and local alternatives. These smaller models can be used for decisions where running a full generative model would be unnecessarily expensive or slow.

The first Mac release had a problem

There was also some turbulence around the release.

The original OpenClaw 2026.9.6 Mac application published on September 23 could crash immediately when launched. The OpenClaw team replaced that build on September 24 with a rebuilt and notarized version containing the fix.

Anyone who downloaded 2026.9.6 early and found that OpenClaw would not start should download the current DMG again. The project states that the npm version was not affected.

The replacement Mac build is already accumulating downloads, which may also be contributing to the renewed GitHub activity around OpenClaw today.

Why is OpenClaw so popular?

OpenClaw is part of the shift from AI that simply answers questions toward AI that can actually perform work across software.

Instead of opening a chatbot every time something needs to be done, OpenClaw can remain connected to messaging services and tools, maintain memory, run background work, and route tasks through different AI models.

It is also open source and designed around local control. OpenClaw states that its memory, credentials, and persistent state remain on the user's hardware, while prompts are sent to whichever AI provider the user chooses.

That combination has turned OpenClaw into something closer to an operating layer for personal AI agents than another standalone chatbot.

Is OpenClaw worth trying?

OpenClaw has considerably more setup and capability than a conventional AI chat application. Someone who only wants to ask occasional questions will probably find ChatGPT, Claude, or another normal assistant considerably simpler.

The appeal is stronger for someone who wants an AI assistant connected to their computer, messaging accounts, files, tools, and other services. The latest release pushes OpenClaw further in that direction by allowing more work to happen independently in background sessions.

The GitHub trend appears to be connected less to OpenClaw suddenly appearing and more to a very active new release arriving while the project is already enormous.
